I work mainly with themes of nature, animals and fantasy landscapes. My work is linked with the imagination of youth and the wonderment of childhood. Using watercolour, acrylic and ink fundamentally. I create illustrations which realise the magic of the natural world and take this into the realms of fiction. This blog will archive my creative process and professional development, showcase my work as I progress through the course, highlighting the inspiring work of others.

"The world around me is a continuous sequence of fortuitous events.
Objects and figures intertwine in my mind; they dance, they fuse and one
adopts the colour and life of another. I find myself drawn into an
intimate world where sensuality and delight in life's form are combined
in a flight of frolic and fantasy."

Gary Benfield's paintings represent a world of objects which combine
figures, mythology, nature, and still life. Despite the casual
appearance of his compositions all his imagery is highly organised, and
after long observations one finds the hidden symmetry and beauty beneath
the layers of finery. The background to his paintings is soft,
reminiscent of Leonardo da Vinci's sketches and sepia tones, most of it
defined only with pencil and a slight highlight of colour. Gary has a
natural talent for depicting things as seen. His work is spontaneous and
reflected by his drawn lines and dashes of colour. His figures dissolve
in and out of their backgrounds and move across the canvas.

The Bunnies Find the Big Pumkin.
I am always drawing my pet Peter and the pumpkins I grow in my garden. I love this painting 'Halloween Bunny!' It could be used as part of a children's book illustration or card.
I drew this image last year on the eve of Halloween.

Little Red Riding Hood
Little Red Riding Hood - Amanda Gilbert © |
This is my interpretation of littile red riding hood. I made this image using a watercolour base and pencil sketch on top. This is not for a children's book illustration but more designed for an older audience. This is due to the darker more scary elements inspired by Victoria Frances' work.

Welcome
I am currently studying Illustration at Plymouth College of Art. I have been drawing since I can remember. I work mainly with themes of nature, animals and fantasy landscapes. My work is linked with the imagination of youth and the wonderment of childhood. Using watercolour, acrylic and ink fundamentally. I create illustrations which realise the magic of the natural world and take this into the realms of fiction. I am inspired by children's books and hope to use my college degree to improve my skills and professional development. This blog will archive my creative process and professional development, showcase my work as I progress through the course, and highlight the work of others which inspires me.
